In this paper I argue that defeasible (nonmonotonic) inferences are occasion-sensitive: the inferential connections of a given claim (plus collateral premises) depend on features of the circumstances surrounding the occasion of inference (including typical environmental conditions, and also pragmatic and contextual factors, such as the information available to agents and how high stakes are)...
