This book originated as one of a series of studies of the English language
and modem English texts which were undertaken by the Nufield Programme
in Linguistics and English Teaching at University College London.
The aim of these studies was to provide an account of aspects of contemporary
English which would be both founded on theory and also applicable
in practice: a description of the system, but one which, since it was
based on evidence from texts of different varieties, including both spoken
and written, would be useful in application to further text studies...
