  • C.Mác đã từng tiên đoán khi khoa học phát triển đến một mức độ nhất định sẽ trở thành lực lượng sản xuất trực tiếp. Những thành tựu trong phát triển lực lượng sản xuất nhờ sự tiến bộ của khoa học công nghệ đã làm thay đổi diện mạo hầu hết các mặt đời sống kinh tế - xã hội. Nhờ đó, ở nhiều lĩnh vực, Việt Nam có bước tiến vượt bậc so với các nước trong khu vực và trên thế giới. Tuy nhiên, việc ứng dụng khoa học công nghệ vào các yếu tố cấu thành nên lực lượng sản xuất ở Việt Nam hiện nay còn nhiều bất cập.   • Bài viết xem xét các vấn đề giá trị, giá trị quốc gia, truyền thống và giá trị quốc gia truyền thống, từ đó đưa ra và phân tích về một số giá trị quốc gia mang tính truyền thống của Việt Nam bao gồm: lòng yêu nước, tinh thần độc lập, đoàn kết và cố kết cộng đồng, tinh thần tôn kính tổ tiên, sự hòa hợp với tự nhiên. Trong “bối cảnh mới” (tức là thời đại ngày nay), các giá trị trên đã có sự biến đổi theo những hướng khác nhau. Tuy nhiên, phần lớn chủng vẫn tồn tại như những giá trị trong thời kỳ hiện đại chứ không biến mất, bởi chúng đều góp phần tạo nên chính con người và xã hội Việt Nam hiện tại.

  • Hannah Arendt (1906 - 1975) là nhà tư tưởng Do Thái nổi tiếng, có ảnh hưởng sâu rộng đến khoa học chính trị và triết học phương Tây thế kỷ XX với các lý thuyết về bản chất của quyền lực, chính trị và chủ nghĩa toàn trị. Nhưng không giống như các nhà tư tường khác, Arendt xuất hiện nhiều hơn với tư cách là một con người hành động và mối quan tâm xuyên suốt trong tác phẩm của bà là vấn đề con người. Bà cho rằng sự tồn tại của con người là có điều kiện. Trên cơ sở đó, Arendt tìm hiểu hoạt động của con người và không gian công cộng trong bối cảnh thế giới hiện đại. Bài viết tập trung phân tích quan niệm của Arendt về nguy cơ của con người trong sự khủng hoảng tính hiện đại.

  • Western propaganda models reconsidered: the ‘Catherine Wheel’ of censorship circumvention in developing world internal conflicts

  • This study is a deep-text analysis of military censorship applied to the national press in the Sri Lankan conflict. We examine press coverage of two Sri Lankan military operations, namely Operation Jayasikurui (1997) and the Capture of Elephant Pass (2000), to identify patterns of signification that help us construct a novel theory of conflict reporting under censorship within the context of ethnic, intrastate conflict. Our study shows that Sri Lankan newspapers, while abiding by censorship regulations, contradictorily also manoeuvred around these regulations as if censorship did not exist.   • The objective of this project was to identify themes, patterns and predictors related to attractiveness ideals and appearance norms in other women among a sample of men and women in the USA and South Korea. The socio-cultural theoretical model has the strongest empirical support for understanding body image disturbance and appearance anxiety, by presenting to women through media representations the current societal standard for image and appearance.   • This article examines the structure of the Korean Society for Journalism and Communication Studies (KSJCS) and the International Communication Asso-ciation (ICA) based on the division membership of scholars. Theoretically, hybridization as coexistence of similarities and differences between the two organizations of different cultural backgrounds were explored. Using network analysis, the study found that in the KSJCS media and journalism-related divisions formed the nucleus of the communication discipline, and that two dimensions, ‘humanities vs. social science’ and ‘interpersonal vs. mediated communication,’ constituted the ICA. Suggestions for future research were addressed.

  • Television performance in Indonesia: steering between civil society, state and market

  • This article looks at the television landscape in Indonesia that has undergone a major transformation in recent decades. As one of the ‘Asian Tigers,’ Indonesia introduced commercial television in two waves between 1989 and 2002 as a complement to the traditional state broadcaster, TVRI. During the Reformasi movement, commercial TV stations contributed to the emerging civil society in the period 1998^2000 by supporting the movement for democratic reform that led to the resignation of President Suharto. An assessment of the current Indonesian television scene shows that most commercial TV stations, after a short coalition with civil society, went ‘back to business’ again in the context of a relatively young but highly competitive Indonesian market.
