Authors: Juyan Zhang; Yi Han (2013) - China’s soft power campaign has spawned many scholarly studies on it, but few have examined its rhetorical aspect. Through keyword analysis, this research examines strategic ambiguity in China’s public affairs rhetoric surrounding the Six Party Talks over North Korea’s nuclear program. The two keywords, ‘the Six Party Talks’ and ‘da ju’ (big picture, overall view), are semantically open and central to China’s rhetoric in defining ‘What is it?’ and ‘Why is it?’ with regard to the talks.
Analysis shows that strategic ambiguity contributed to some of China’s goals.
However, it was not adjusted when it stopped working. Its effectiveness was undercut by certain inconsistent messages, and da ju failed to differentiate between domestic and international political context and was also cul...

Authors: Fei Shen; Zhongshi Steve Guo (2013) - This study examines theoretical connections among three variables, each in its own way engendering profound political implications for the Chinese society today: news use, national pride, and political trust. We focused on the impact of ‘positivity bias in news’ and advanced a theoretical model on the basis of framing theory to address the dynamics of propaganda and its persuasive effects. Using data from the World Value Survey, we found: (1) news use in general, television news viewing in particular, was positively associated with political trust and national pride; (2) impact of news use on political trust disappeared once national pride was statistically controlled; and (3) intensity of national pride moderated the bivariate relationship between news use and political trust. The ...

Authors: Jeongsub Lim (2013) - An e-mail survey of online journalists reveals that online journalists’ emotional responses to their competitors’ coverage are significantly correlated with their job satisfaction, workload, and the perceived quality of their news website. Authors: Jane D. Brown; Xinshu Zhao; Mena Ning Wang; Quan Liu; Amy Shirong Lu; Lucille Jing Li; Rebecca R. Ortiz; Shengqing Liao; Guoliang Zhang (2013) - A large sample of entertainment television programs that were aired on 28 channels in China in 2004 was analyzed for romantic and sexual content.
Romantic scenes, typically portraying men and women already in committed relationships, appeared in 80% of the 196 programs analyzed. The analysis suggested that, according to Chinese television in the early part of the twenty-first century, emotional love was more important than physical sexual interaction in romantic relationships. More than half of the 1112 romantic scenes analyzed depicted love between the partners without any discussion or display of physical sexual behavior. Only 8% of scenes included discussion or depiction of sexual behavior (e.g., touching, kissing, and intercourse) without some sense that the partners were in a ...

Authors: Sunny S.K. Lam (2013) - Information communication technologies (ICTs) create new channels and repertoires for mediated communication among parents and their children in mobile locations, thus playing a special role in reinvigorating intergenerational family solidarity in contemporary translocal China. For China’s rapid, uneven economic development since 1978, social mobility has been fast growing and many family members are separated into different locations for seeking upward mobility as reciprocal aspirations. Some cases of translocal Chinese, studying, working, and living apart from their elderly parents were studied to investigate ICT’s impact on family solidarity within the new dynamics of more symbolic and symmetrical family obligations and interactions. Their demonstrations of redefined sociability ...

Authors: Lihong Zhang; Young Min (2013) - This study investigates the framing effects of gay-themed entertainment media in China. Specifically, the study explores the mechanisms underlying attribution framing and value framing, through two separate experiments. The results of the first experiment indicate that exposure to attribution frames had considerable influence on the participants’ perceptions of the controllability of homosexuality and their emotional responses. In addition, fictional entertainment media’s framing of the origin of homosexuality indirectly influenced the participants’ opinion through anger. Those participants exposed to a program homosexuality as a type of ‘controllable’ sexuality were likely to express anger and thus were not likely to support gay rights. The results of the second experiment indicate...
